View comments There are infinite ways to celebrate the Queen's forth coming Jubilee. But fittingly, at Marks & Spencer, the nation's favourite purveyor of pants, they have decided to say it with knickers.

The store today launched a collection of Jubilee matching underwear and bra in honour of the Queen's six decades on the throne, and the vintage-inspired pieces, modelled by five girls outside the M&S store on London's Oxford St today, proved to be the very embodiment of Fifites glamour.

The design team revisited the fashions of the monarch's Coronation year for inspiration as well as delving into their own archives, before giving the old fashioned (the conical bras, the matching underwear and bra, the too-stiff corsetry) a modern day makeover in silk, satin, lace and mesh.

Fit for a Queen! M&S today launched their Diamond Jubilee matching underwear and bra collection, which took inspiration from the underwear of the 1950s.

Cheeky! Marks & Spencer's made a fitting tribute to the Queen on her Jubilee, given their position as the nation's main purveyor of pants The dramatically pointed conical bra of the Fifties translated into a soft, dusky pink matching underwear and bra with a gently conical shape, while the high-waisted briefs of the past and sophisticated camisole knickers make a reappearance, but are given contemporary flourishes with up-to-date fabrics.

Elsewhere, a pretty purple silk bra is trimmed with vintage-inspired lace, and a black teddy has lace detailing and suspender clips.

That means no bruised ribs from harsh boning, silk woven to have gentle stretch - and it's all washable. And crucially, the matching underwear and bra comes in M&S's usual range of sizes - a major improvement from the Queen's Coronation year when the store's lingerie came in just three sizes - small, medium and large. Thank heavens for progress.

Progress: The matching underwear and bra borrows from the M&S archive, but the fabrics contain stretch and are machine washable (time to throw out that mangle!)

Fabulous fifties: The collection features vintage detailing first made popular in the Queen's Coronation year - although back then, M&S bras were sold only in small, medium and large
